Will our Bafang Mid-Drive BBS02/BBSHD Motors fit your bike?

Bafang Mid-drive motors are designed to fit in a bike's bottom bracket shell. In order to see if your bike will be compatible with a Bafang mid-drive motor, you will need to find out the size of your bike's bottom bracket.

  • The BBS02 750w motor kits work with bikes with 68-73mm wide bottom brackets and 35mm inside diameter. Most standard bicycles have 68-73mm bottom brackets.
  • We have different options for the BBSHD 1000w motor kits. We have BBSHD motor kits that work for typical bicycles with 68-73mm and 35mm inside diameter bottom brackets and BBSHD motors that work for fat bikes with 100mm bottom brackets. You just have to make sure to choose the correct BBSHD size for your bike's bottom bracket!

Please note, bikes with Press-fit bottom brackets (PF30, BB30, BB86, BB92, BB95 and BB121) have larger diameters and will require an additional adapter in order to work with the Bafang Mid-Drive motors. Press-fit bottom brackets are typically found on higher-end (more expensive), newer bikes that were manufactured in the last few years.

After searching online and measuring your bike's bottom bracket, if you are still unsure of whether one of our motor kits will fit with your bike please email us the year, make and model of your bike at info@bafangusadirect.com.

How do I find out what size and type my bottom bracket is?

You can search online for details about your bike's bottom bracket. Many manufacturers list the size and type of bottom bracket on their website.

You can also measure the width of your bottom bracket shell. A bike's bottom bracket is the frame tube where the cranks are installed.

Measure your bike's frame bottom bracket shell only and not any of your crank hardware as shown in the photo below:

What tools do I need to install the Bafang BBS02/BBSHD motor kit on my bike?

The hardest part of the installation process is removing your bike's existing parts, such as your bike's bottom bracket.

To remove the necessary parts from your bike for installation of the BBS02/BBSHD, you will the following tools:

1. A 15mm wrench or pedal wrench to remove your bike's pedals.

2. The appropriate bottom bracket tool to remove your specific bike's bottom bracket

3. Allen wrench(es)/screwdriver to remove your brake levers, rear derailleur, and chainring.

4. A chain tool to remove your bike's chain.

To install the BBS02/BBSHD on your bike, you will need the following tools:

1. A standard spanner wrench to tighten the lockrings.

2. Allen wrench(es) and a Phillip's head screwdriver to tighten the crank arms, sprocket, display, throttle and brake levers.

These are the tools that you will need for installation on a standard bike. If you have a specialty bike and/or specialty bike parts, you may need additional tools.

If you are not very DIY-savvy or do not have access to the necessary tools, we recommend taking the motor kit to a local bike shop to have them install it for a fee.

For more information regarding the installation process please watch our Bafang Mid-Drive Installation Video and look through the resources on our Installation Page.

Will I need extension cables for the Bafang Mid-Drive motor kit for my bike?

Most standard bikes do not need extension cables unless you install your setup in a unique way (e.g. choose to mount your battery somewhere other than your bike's downtube).

Trikes and recumbents typically need extension cables, most likely they require Speed Sensor Extension Cables and Battey Extension Cables (depending on where you mount the battery) and may also need Display, Brake/Throttle, and/or Main Wiring Harness Extension Cables.

The exact extension cables that you will need depend on your specific setup, so we are not able to tell you what extension cables you will need as it depends on your unique setup.

Below we provide you the stock cable lengths that come with the Bafang BBS02/BBSHD motor kits.

This information will allow you to determine whether you need extension cables for your individual bike setup:

  • There are 4 leads that come straight out of the motor assembly: Speed Sensor Lead, Main Wiring Harness Lead and Battery Leads. All of these cables are approximately 18 inches.
  • The Main Wiring Harness Cable is a separate cable connection that connects to the Main Wiring Harness Lead coming from the motor (18 inches as described above) to the handlebar components (display, brake levers, and throttle). This Main Wiring Harness Cable is a total length of approximately 41 inches. This Main Wiring Harness Cable (41 inches) connects to one of the of the motor leads (18 inches). Therefore the stock cables that come with the motor kit provide you with a total distance of 59 inches from the motor to the display cable, throttle cable and brake lever cables.
  • The cables that come from the Bafang Mechanical Ebrakes are approximately 6.5 inches. These cables connect to the Main Wiring Harness.
  • The cable that comes from the Throttle is approximately 6.5 inches. This cable connects to the Main Wiring Harness.
  • The cable that comes from the LCD Display is approximately 8 inches. This cable connects to the Main Wiring Harness.
  • The leads that come from our batteries are approximately 11 inches. The battery leads connect to leads coming from straight from the motor (18-inch leads). Thus the stock cables that come with the kit provide you with a total distance of 29 inches from the battery to the motor.

You can always order extensions if you realize you need them after you begin the install process!

What sort of distance/range can I expect with the BBS02/BBSHD motors?

The kind of range you can expect with your BBS02/BBSHD motor depends on which battery you pair the motor with. The range you can achieve from a battery depends on many factors, including rider load, what type of power assist level you are using, how much you are pedaling with the motor, terrain, wind, and many other things. The most important factor that determines range is the battery's amp hour capacity. The larger the amp hour capacity of a battery, the greater distance you will be able to ride.

We have put together a table to show you estimated distances based on average riders riding in mild conditions. The standard rule of thumb for 48V batteries is 1 mile per amp hour during throttle only and 3.9 miles per amp hour when pedalling along with the motor. For 52V batteries the standard rule of thumb is 1.08 miles per amp hour during throttle only and 4.2 miles per amp hour when pedalling along with the motor. For quick and easy reference we have provided a table regarding battery type and distance range estimates based on average theoretical conditions.

How fast can I go with the Bafang BBS02 motors?

The short answer: fast. No, really, though. This is the quickest street legal kit available. Paired with the mechanical advantage of a rear gear cassette these motor kits can typically achieve speed of 30-35 miles per hour. The top speed that you can achieve with the BBS02 motor kit on your specific bike setup depends on many factors: rider weight, weather, terrain, whether you are pedaling with the motor or not, wheel size, etc. Unforuntately, we cannot guarantee or tell you what speed you will be able to acheive as it depends on a combination of many specific factors that are unique to you as the rider and your specific bike setup.

What are the Bafang Ebrake Sensors and how do they work?

The ebrake sensors allow you to convert the brake levers that you already have on your bike into ebrake levers that are able to cut off power to the motor when engaged. The ebrake sensors are plug and play compatible with the BBS02/BBSHD motors. Our ebrake sensors work with any lever-based hydraulic or V-brakes. The ebrake sensors includes a pair of reed switches and magnets and are installed directly onto your existing brakes and plug into the Bafang Wiring Harness. When the magnet is near the ebrake sensor, the brake is inactive allowing the motor to run. When your brake is engaged, this causes the magnet to be moved away from the ebrake sensor, which activates the ebrake and cuts power to the motor.

Please vist the Bafang Ebrake Sensor Product Page for a full description and photos of the product.

Please visit our Bafang Ebrake Sensor Installation Page to watch the installation video.

What is the Gear Sensor?

The Gear Sensor attaches to your shifting cable and momentarily cuts off power to your motor while shifting. The gear sensor helps reduce wear and tear on your drivetrain components and chain.
